What Is A Movie Treatment?
Writing A Movie Treatment

The Future of MovieTreatments.com? That's up to YOU.

I've owned this domain name for almost 4 years now. When I first purchased it I had a grand vision: a fully functional database-driven web site, much like Monster.com but for movie treatments. Sure there are other movie treatment web sites out there, but my vision was for something more revolutionary.

The current content on the home page outlines the grand vision I had for the site. A place where users could post their own treatments, read other people's treatments, download sample treatments, learn how to write treatments, and so on. Basically a one-stop shop for everything movie treatments. The ultimate goal being to provide a place for unknown, talented writers to post their work and to help them get it into the hands of Hollywood hot-shots. A lofty goal, but one that I thought could revolutionize the way that treatments, and eventually scripts, were reviewed and purchased by Hollywood.

But it hasn't been easy. I have a very demanding career and my free time is pretty much nil. The site of my dreams requires massive design, coding and administration, not to mention an incredible investment of time and money, and I simply haven't been able to give it the attention it needs to get off the ground. Other potential issues abound. If people uploaded their own treatments, how would I securely protect their original work, but at the same time share it with the masses? If Hollywood hot-shots wanted to buy someone's treatment, would I broker the deal? The possibility for plagiarism and theft or original work was always there, which meant I would need some legal council; not cheap.

Over the years I have gotten considerable traffic to the site, and hundreds of e-mails from faithful visitors asking when the site would be up, when I'd have some sample treatments, if I could help them pitch their treatments to a Hollywood hot-shot, and on and on, the interest and support kept pouring in. I thought many times about selling this great domain name, but if I did I'd always feel like I missed out on something with big potential, and also feel that I let down the hangers on, and those are not feelings that I want to have. So what now?

My most recent thought is to turn the site into a forum/discussion board. I know forums can get crazy and out of hand, but their essence is, I think, of some value here. We'd have the security of user accounts, people could collaborate, write tutorials, share sample treatments, and the site could grow into a community of like-minded people. As things evolved, we could have a 'Premium' section with additional content not available to the general public. The possibilities are many.

I also pondered turning this site into a full-blown social network. Think Facebook but for movie treatments. Would that be overkill? Perhaps, but as we see everyday, social networks are exploding in popularity. I myself belong to several, and I must say they are a great place to collaborate with family, friends and like-minded people and exchange ideas and information. Not to mention network with other people that have the same interests as you. And if you know the movie business, it's all about networking.

So there you have it. The fate of the web site is in your hands. If you'd be so kind as to take the poll above, I'd appreciate it. I'll let votes trickle in for a month or two and see what the people have to say, then make a plan for getting to where we need to be. Vote now!

Lastly, if you have an idea for the site that is not listed in the poll, please e-mail me at movietreatments@yahoo.com and let me know. Thanks!
