Treatment For Classic Re-Make?
 

Would a large studio that owns the rights to a classic- entertain a treatment for an updated re-make?

Absolutely. You would be writing on your own, I'm assuming? Not 'on spec'?

But the answer is yes. You could approach Universal with a new treatment for, say, "Creature from the Black Lagoon". Not only is it no problem, legally speaking, but it gives you a leg up because all popular franchises are cyclical. They are down, but never out.

Anyway- as long as you don't try and screw the studio (Ex. The Creature from the Brown Lagoon) by infringing on their property and taking it somewhere else, you'll be fine. Essentially you would be selling them their own property, just updated.

Hell, "Creature from the Black Lagoon" is a good idea, actually. With "The Wolfman" just out it only goes to show that sooner or later a studio will return to its time-tested properties. Think of the awesome Creature you could make with a combo of advanced makeup and CG . . .

Remember- the purpose of the movie industry is to make money, not movies. That's just the means.

So when are we going to see your treatment for this? I like the idea.

I'm settled down and (trying to) write novels in the boondocks now. Not actively doing the Hollywood thing anymore. I had a good run, though, and can always go back to it if I want. I always said I didn't want to raise a family in L.A. though, so, what can I say?

But maybe I'll whip up a quick treatment anyway. This site needs as many as it can get. Studio execs have a STACK of scripts/treaments they can go through- we need to compete with that to make this a viable option for them. One day X is hot, then Y is hot, you never know and you have you have lots of available options (my six script rule- which I think I stole from Syd Field, but whatever).

Anyway, I always liked that "Creature"- he was the only early Universal monster that didn't look like a guy in makeup. True, he was a guy in a suit- but it was a good suit.

I'm a big horror movie buff and ogt turned on to the old universal movies awhile back. You're right- "Creature from the Black Lagoon" hasn't been lately remade like all the rest- Mummy (like it), Dracula (loved it), Frankenstein (ok) and now Wolfman (haven't seen it).

It's probably just the right time to pitch that idea-
